Diet & Inflammation

    Eat to Calm Your Sinuses

The naturopathic anti-inflammatory and antifungal plate — what to remove, what to add, and a 30-day reset that often achieves more than any supplement.

    Eat to Calm Your Sinuses
    The Foundation

Why diet does half the work

You can take every herb in the apothecary, but if you eat sugar and processed food three times a day, your sinuses will keep flaring. Diet sits beneath every other naturopathic intervention — it sets the inflammatory tone, feeds (or starves) fungi, and shapes the gut microbiome that trains your immune system.

The naturopathic diet for sinus health rests on six principles:

    Layer 1

    Lower Inflammation

Replace inflammatory oils, sugar and processed food with omega-3s, polyphenols and traditional fats.

    Layer 2

    Starve the Fungi

Cut sugar, alcohol, refined carbs and mouldy foods that feed Candida and fungal sinus drivers.

    Layer 3

    Heal the Gut

Diverse fermented foods, prebiotic fibres and L-glutamine to repair the gut-sinus axis.

    Layer 4

    Calm Histamine

Avoid aged, fermented, leftover or histamine-rich foods if mast-cell symptoms dominate.

    Layer 5

    Hydrate Properly

35 mL/kg of clean water daily — non-negotiable for mucociliary flow.

    Layer 6

    Eat the Rainbow

30+ different plants per week feeds microbial diversity and floods the body with polyphenols.

    Phase One

    What to remove first

For 30 days, remove these. Most patients see meaningful sinus improvement within 2 weeks.

    • Sugar in all forms — including honey, maple, agave, dried fruit during the strict phase.
    • Alcohol — vasodilator, histamine-releaser, fungal fuel.
    • Dairy — mucus-producer in 40% of sinus patients.
    • Gluten — gut-irritant in many; worth testing for 30 days.
    • Refined seed oils — sunflower, soy, corn, canola; pro-inflammatory omega-6s.
    • Ultra-processed foods — anything with an ingredient list a child can't read.
    • Mouldy foods — peanuts, dried fruit, cashews, aged cheeses, leftovers older than 24 hours.
    • Fruit juice and sweet drinks — concentrated fructose feeds fungi and spikes inflammation.

    The 80/20 reality

Be 100% strict for 30 days, then aim for 80% adherence long-term with strategic indulgences. Permanent restriction breeds resentment and rebound binges.

    Phase Two

    What to add

The naturopathic anti-inflammatory plate — these nine foods do the heavy lifting.

    🐟

    Wild Salmon

Omega-3 EPA/DHA — the most powerful dietary anti-inflammatory; aim for 3 servings per week.

    Fermented Vegetables

Sauerkraut, kimchi and brined pickles re-seed gut diversity that calms sinus inflammation.

    The Hidden Driver

    The gut-sinus axis

About 70% of immune tissue lives in the gut. The same dysbiosis that drives gut inflammation also drives sinus inflammation — through shared cytokine signalling, microbial metabolites, and Th2 immune regulation. Healing the gut is one of the most underrated interventions in chronic sinusitis.

    The naturopathic gut-repair sequence:

    1. Remove inflammatory foods (above).
    2. Replace stomach acid and digestive enzymes if low — try bitters before meals (gentian, dandelion).
    3. Re-inoculate with diverse fermented vegetables, kefir water, and a soil-based probiotic.
    4. Repair the gut lining with bone broth, L-glutamine 5 g daily, slippery elm and zinc carnosine.
    5. Re-balance stress and sleep — the gut microbiome shifts within 24 hours of poor sleep.
    30-Day Reset

    The naturopathic diet protocol

Sequenced to minimise die-off and maximise sustainable progress.

    1. 01
      Days 1–7

      Clear the inflammatory load

Remove sugar, alcohol, gluten, dairy, refined seed oils and ultra-processed food. Drink 35 mL/kg water daily. Add bone broth and leafy greens at every meal. Expect headaches and irritability around day 3 — push through.

    2. 02
      Days 8–14

      Layer in healing foods

Add wild fish 3×/week, turmeric and ginger daily, 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, a handful of berries, and 30 g of nuts. Begin a daily golden milk or herbal tea (mullein/elderflower).

    3. 03
      Days 15–21

      Repair the gut

Introduce 1 tbsp of fermented vegetables with each meal; add prebiotic fibres (artichoke, leek, chicory, asparagus); start L-glutamine 5 g daily on an empty stomach. Consider a soil-based probiotic.

    4. 04
      Days 22–30

      Re-introduce mindfully

Test one removed food category every 3 days (gluten, then dairy, then nightshades). Track symptoms in a journal. Many people discover dairy, gluten or alcohol are direct sinus triggers they never noticed before.
