When Natural Care Isn't Enough
Naturopathy works best alongside accurate diagnosis. Here's when to keep going at home — and when to step out for emergency, conventional or specialist support.

🛑 Emergency red flags
Go to A&E now — do not wait, do not try a remedy
Sudden vision changes, double vision or a bulging eye; facial numbness or weakness on one side; severe one-sided facial pain or rapidly worsening swelling; black tissue or eschar inside the nose; severe headache with high fever and stiff neck; confusion, drowsiness or seizures with sinus symptoms; or any sinus symptom in someone who is immunocompromised, uncontrolled-diabetic, post-chemotherapy or post-transplant can indicate invasive fungal sinusitis or cavernous sinus thrombosis. These are surgical and infectious-disease emergencies. Naturopathy has no role until they are excluded.
When to see your GP
- Symptoms persist beyond 10 days without improvement or worsen after initial improvement.
- High fever (above 38.5°C) with sinus symptoms.
- Severe one-sided facial pain (rule out dental origin and other causes).
- You've had 4+ acute sinus infections in a year.
- Symptoms have continued for 12+ weeks (chronic sinusitis — needs assessment).
- You're losing your sense of smell.
- You need a referral letter for ENT or other specialists.
- You want baseline blood work (vitamin D, iron, thyroid, HbA1c, IgE).
Be specific with your GP: "I have chronic sinusitis lasting X weeks. I'd like an ENT referral and the following blood work as a baseline."
When to see an ENT consultant
- Chronic sinusitis lasting 12+ weeks not responding to first-line treatment.
- Visible nasal polyps or suspected polyps (loss of smell, persistent obstruction).
- Recurrent sinus infections (4+ in a year).
- Suspected structural problems — deviated septum, concha bullosa, choanal atresia.
- Unilateral (one-sided) symptoms that don't resolve — needs scope and imaging to exclude serious causes.
- Persistent post-nasal drip with blood-tinged mucus.
- Suspected fungal sinus disease — needs nasal endoscopy and possibly CT.
- Ongoing dental-origin maxillary sinus problems.
The good news
An accurate diagnosis from an ENT (endoscopy + CT if needed) makes naturopathic care more effective, not less. You're targeting the right phenotype rather than guessing.
When to see a functional medicine doctor
Functional medicine specialists run deeper investigations into systemic drivers — useful when standard care has plateaued or naturopathic protocols aren't gaining traction.
Consider one when:
- You suspect mould-related illness or chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS).
- You have multiple chronic conditions alongside sinusitis (fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, GI issues, hormonal problems).
- You want comprehensive testing — urine mycotoxin panel, organic acids test, comprehensive stool analysis, food sensitivity panel.
- Standard naturopathic protocols haven't moved you in 3–6 months.
- You suspect heavy metal toxicity, chronic Lyme, or systemic Candida overgrowth.
Choosing a naturopath
For nuanced sinus work, look for these qualifications and signs:
- UK: General Naturopathic Council (GNC) member, BNA member, BCNH-trained, or IFM-certified Functional Medicine practitioner.
- US/Canada: Licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) from a CNME-accredited 4-year programme.
- Specific experience with chronic sinusitis, mould-related illness or biofilm-driven conditions.
- Willing to collaborate with your GP/ENT rather than dismiss conventional medicine.
- Uses evidence-informed protocols, not "miracle cures" or proprietary product systems.
- Transparent about realistic timelines — 3–6 months for chronic sinus work, not 2 weeks.

Red flags in a practitioner
Anyone who claims to cure chronic sinusitis in weeks; pressures you into expensive private testing without explanation; sells only their own branded supplements; or actively discourages you from seeing your GP for proper diagnosis. Walk away.
