The Naturopathic Sinus Stack
The complete herbal toolkit — antifungals, biofilm disruptors, mucolytics, mast-cell stabilisers and adaptogenic mushrooms — with doses, evidence and how to layer them.

Botanical antifungals
The foundation of any naturopathic protocol for fungal-driven sinus disease. Always rotate — fungi adapt within weeks to a single antifungal.
Oregano Oil
Origanum vulgare
Carvacrol and thymol — broad-spectrum antifungal effective against Aspergillus and Candida.
Pau d'Arco
Tabebuia impetiginosa
Lapachol-rich Amazonian bark with traditional antifungal action; gentle for long rotations.
Olive Leaf
Olea europaea
Oleuropein — antifungal, antiviral and immune-modulating; well-tolerated long term.
Garlic (Allicin)
Allium sativum
Stabilised allicin disrupts fungal membranes and biofilms.
Caprylic Acid
Medium-chain fatty acid from coconut; disrupts Candida cell walls — staple of antifungal protocols.
Berberine
Berberis spp.
Broad antimicrobial; addresses gut dysbiosis that feeds sinus inflammation.
Biofilm disruptors
Biofilms make microbes up to 1000× harder to clear. These six are the naturopathic biofilm-busting toolkit — start with NAC for at least a week before adding antimicrobials.
NAC
Cracks the disulphide bonds in biofilm matrix and thins eosinophilic mucus.
Monolaurin
Coconut-derived ester that dissolves the lipid envelopes of biofilm-protected microbes.
Lactoferrin
Strips iron the biofilm needs; gentle, well tolerated, good for sensitive guts.
Serrapeptase
Proteolytic enzyme that digests biofilm proteins and dead inflammatory tissue.
Propolis
Bee resin packed with flavonoids — antifungal, anti-biofilm, tissue-healing.
Manuka Honey
Medical-grade MGO 400+ — disrupts staph and Candida biofilms.

Mucolytic & drainage herbs
Thin the mucus, open the sinuses, restore mucociliary flow. These work best as daily teas and tinctures during active symptoms.
Bromelain
Pineapple enzyme that thins mucus and reduces sinus inflammation; clinically studied for sinusitis.
Horseradish
Pungent volatile oils open sinuses fast; natural antimicrobials.
Mullein
Verbascum thapsus
Soothing demulcent that clears mucus from upper airways.
Marshmallow Root
Althaea officinalis
Mucilage coats and soothes inflamed mucosa; pairs well with mullein.
Elderflower
Sambucus nigra
Anti-catarrhal — drains sinuses and reduces mucus viscosity.
Andrographis
Andrographis paniculata
Bitter Asian herb that shortens upper respiratory infections and reduces sinus inflammation.
Immune & mast-cell support
Calm the over-reactive Type-2 cascade behind chronic sinus inflammation. Quercetin and bromelain together are the cornerstone combination.
Quercetin
Stabilises mast cells and lowers histamine; calms Type-2 inflammation.
Luteolin
Flavonoid mast-cell stabiliser; complements quercetin in allergic-driven sinusitis.
Stinging Nettle
Urtica dioica
Natural antihistamine; classic herbalist's choice for allergic rhinitis and seasonal sinus flares.
Vitamin D3
Most chronic sinus patients are deficient; modulates immune balance and reduces polyp recurrence.
Omega-3 EPA/DHA
Resolves chronic inflammation; lowers pro-inflammatory eicosanoids.
Vitamin C
Cofactor for histamine breakdown; supports mucosal immunity.
Medicinal mushrooms
Adaptogenic immune modulators that re-train, rather than suppress, immune balance. Long-term, low-risk additions to any chronic sinus protocol.
Reishi
Ganoderma lucidum
Adaptogenic immune modulator; calms over-reactive Th2 inflammation.
Turkey Tail
Trametes versicolor
Beta-glucans support balanced immune function; particularly helpful with gut dysbiosis.
Cordyceps
Cordyceps militaris
Improves oxygen utilisation and reduces inflammatory markers; supports respiratory function.
How to layer them safely
- Weeks 1–2: Foundation only — NAC, bromelain, quercetin, vitamin D, daily saline rinses.
- Weeks 3–4: Add one antifungal (oregano oil 3 weeks, then break).
- Weeks 4–6: Switch antifungal (pau d'arco or olive leaf); add propolis daily.
- Weeks 6+: Add a mushroom (reishi or turkey tail) for long-term immune balance.
- Throughout: Manuka honey daily; mullein/elderflower tea during flares.
Pace yourself
Adding everything at once causes die-off symptoms. One new addition per week is the sustainable pace. If you feel worse for more than 3 days, drop the most recent addition and reduce dose by half.
