Mould & Environment

    The Hidden Trigger

Why your home might be the reason your sinuses won't heal — and the naturopathic environmental playbook to find it, fix it and clear the toxins.

    The Hidden Trigger
    The #1 Missed Cause

Why your home might be the problem

The most under-treated factor in recurrent sinus disease is the indoor air the patient breathes for eight hours every night. No herb, no rinse, no diet survives a mouldy bedroom or a contaminated HVAC. If you've done everything else and still flare, the answer is almost always environmental.

The six environmental pillars of naturopathic sinus care:

    Layer 1

    Humidity 40–50%

A £10 hygrometer is the cheapest, highest-impact tool you can buy. Below 40%, cilia stop sweeping; above 60%, mould thrives.

    Layer 2

    HEPA + Carbon Filtration

A bedroom HEPA + activated carbon air purifier running 24/7 strips spores, dust mites and VOCs from the air you breathe 8 hours a night.

    Layer 3

    Find Hidden Mould

Walk-through for visible mould, water staining, damp smells; check washing-machine seals, behind kickboards, around windows, bathroom grout.

    Layer 4

    Indoor Plants

Snake plant, peace lily, Boston fern and spider plant gently filter air; choose terracotta pots with stones to prevent damp soil mould.

    Layer 5

    Sunlight + Sweat

Daily natural light regulates immunity; regular sweating (sauna, exercise, hot baths) clears mycotoxins through the skin.

    Layer 6

    Reduce VOC Load

Swap fragranced cleaners, candles and air fresheners for unscented or essential-oil based; air the home daily.

    The Walk-Through

    A 30-minute home audit

Set a timer. Take a torch. Walk every room. You're looking for water, damp smells and discolouration — not just visible mould.

    • 🛁 Bathroom: grout, sealant around bath/shower, behind toilet, extractor fan condition.
    • 🍳 Kitchen: under sink, behind fridge, washing-machine seals (pull the rubber back!), dishwasher seals.
    • 🛏️ Bedroom: mattress base, behind bed, around window frames, in wardrobes against external walls.
    • 🏠 Whole house: behind kickboards, ceiling stains, bubbling paint, basement/cellar, loft hatches.
    • 💨 HVAC: when was the filter last changed? Have the ducts ever been inspected?
    • 👃 Smell test: damp, earthy or "old" smells = water damage somewhere, even if hidden.

    Bleach makes mould worse

Never use bleach on mould. It only kills surface spores, doesn't penetrate porous materials, and the disturbance releases millions of spores into the air. Use professional remediation for anything larger than a dinner plate.

    Fixing It

    The remediation hierarchy

    1. Find the moisture source — leaking roof, broken pipe, condensation, rising damp. Mould always follows water; fix the source first or it returns.
    2. Contain the area — close doors, seal with plastic; use a HEPA air-scrubber in the room.
    3. Remove and replace contaminated porous materials (drywall, carpet, ceiling tiles, MDF). Hard surfaces can be cleaned.
    4. Clean with EPA-approved fungicidal cleaners — never bleach. Borax, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are reasonable mild options for small surface mould.
    5. Dry thoroughly with a dehumidifier for 48–72 hours.
    6. Re-test — visual inspection plus an ERMI/HERTSMI-2 dust test 4–6 weeks after remediation.

    Personal Detox

    Mycotoxin clearance naturally

Once you've reduced exposure, you need to clear what's already in the body. Mycotoxins are stored in fat tissue and continually re-circulated through bile. Binders interrupt that cycle.

    ⚫

    Activated Charcoal

Binds mycotoxins in the gut for excretion; the workhorse binder. Take 90 min away from food and supplements.

    500–1500 mg before bedPromising
    🪨

    Bentonite Clay

Volcanic clay that binds biotoxins and heavy metals; often rotated with charcoal.

1 tsp food-grade powder in water, 90 min from foodTraditional
    🟢

    Chlorella

Algae that binds mercury, mould toxins and pesticides; nutrient-dense.

    🧬

    Glutathione

Master antioxidant the liver uses to neutralise mycotoxins; depleted in mould-affected patients.

    Liposomal 500–1000 mg/day or NAC 600 mg × 2Strong
    🥦

    Sulforaphane

From broccoli sprouts; activates the Nrf2 detox pathway and supports glutathione production.

Fresh broccoli sprouts 30 g/day or supplement 30 mgStrong
    🌿

    Milk Thistle

    Silybum marianum

Silymarin protects and regenerates liver cells handling mycotoxin clearance.

    250 mg standardised (80% silymarin) × 2/dayStrong

    The detox sequence

Open the drainage pathways before opening detox: bowels moving daily, 35 mL/kg water, sweating regularly, lymphatic movement. Then add binders before bed, glutathione precursors with breakfast, and sulforaphane daily. Pushing detox without drainage causes dramatic die-off symptoms.

    The Plan

    An 8-week environment reset

    1. 01
      Week 1

      Audit + measure

Buy a hygrometer; place one in bedroom, one in bathroom. Walk every room with a torch — look for visible mould, water staining, damp smells. Photograph anything suspect.

    2. 02
      Week 2

      Quick wins

Install bedroom HEPA + carbon air purifier. Replace HVAC filter. Run extractor fans during/after every shower. Open windows daily for 10 minutes.

    3. 03
      Week 3

      Deep remediation

If you found mould: hire a professional remediator (never DIY anything larger than a dinner plate; never use bleach — it makes mould airborne). Address the moisture source first.

    4. 04
      Weeks 4–6

      Personal detox layer

Begin glutathione precursors (NAC 600 mg × 2/day) and sulforaphane; add a binder (charcoal or bentonite) before bed; start daily sauna or sweating exercise; hydrate 35 mL/kg.

    5. 05
      Weeks 6–8

      Test and refine

If symptoms still flare at home, consider an ERMI or HERTSMI-2 dust test before assuming the house is fine. Re-evaluate sleep environment first — that's where you spend 1/3 of your life.
